  Associate in Science/Associate in Applied Science
  Sign Language Interpretation (221A)
   
  This program prepares students for employment as interpreters for the deaf, and provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in occupations such as nursing, education and human services agencies. Students learn vocabulary and linguistic principles of the language and the process for interpreting into both English and American Sign Language (ASL). Students will also study the ethical and professional considerations of working in this field. Finally, cognitive information is presented which deals with aspects of deaf culture and the phenomenon of deafness itself.

  **Students interested in an educational interpreting specialty should take EHD 1402 Issues of Educational Interpreting (6 credit hours) in place of EHD 1404, 1930 and 1945.
  NOTE: You have two options in this program: the associate in science (A.S.) degree, which can prepare you for employment or transfer to a state university, and the associate in applied science (A.A.S.) degree, which is intended primarily for students who want immediate employment after graduation. If you choose the A.S. degree you must take MAC 1105, MGF 1106 or a higher level mathematics. The A.A.S. degree requires MAT 1033 or higher. Please see an advisor to determine the option that is best for you.
