  Medical Coder/Biller (MCB) (B398)
   
  THE CAREER: Health information coding is the transformation of verbal descriptions of diseases, injuries and procedures into alphanumeric designations. Responsibilities include coding of diagnoses and procedures; preparation and processing of insurance claims. Medicare and other third party payors use coded data for claims processing. Coded information is used in the assessment of clinical care, to support research activity, and the identification of health care concerns critical to the public at large.

  Certification and Licensing:
Completers of the program are advised to gain coding experience in inpatient coding as well as outpatient coding before taking the Coding Certification Specialist examination.
 
  Articulations:
All courses are college credit and are transferable into the Health Information Management AS/AAS program.
 
  Requirements and Curriculum:
Prior to being admitted to the program, an applicant must complete BSC 2085C, HSC 1531, and CGS 1570.

  Application Procedures:
An applicant must:
1. Have an official high school transcript or GED® test scores
2. Complete Medical Coder/Biller program application (contact the HIM office for deadlines)
3. Be currently enrolled or a former Florida Community College student
4. Completed BSC 2085C, HSC 1531 and CGS 1570 with a grade of C or higher. A 2.0 GPA must be maintained.
5. Have College Placement Test scores by the program application deadline
 
Applicants will be ranked by the quality points earned in the three prerequiste courses listed in step 4.
 
Students who verify work experience in health information management will earn two points per year, up to six points.
 
In the event of a tie, CPT scores will be used.
 
A physical exam will be required upon acceptance to the program.
 
  Total Tuition and Fees: Estimated tuition is $1,600 (for Florida residents as of 7/04). Estimated cost of books, materials and fees is $550.
