It doesn’t matter if you make auto parts or apple pies, produce pharmaceuticals or print the daily news, manufacturer coffee, cigars or chocolate fudge, industry runs on electricity and when that current stops, so does America.

Today’s manufacturers ship and receive according to a Just In Time (JIT) business model. That means there is no time for an electrical glitch. And that creates a demand for industrial electrical specialists who can install a safe, constant, operation.

On the job, you begin with construction and site plans, and then execute the designs and installation according to National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements for industrial wiring, hazardous location installations and equipment, and power distribution with transformers.

The Industrial Maintenance program is designed to prepare students for entry level positions relating to industrial maintenance. This program covers electrical basics including: programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial wiring, electronic technology, equipment maintenance, and motors and controls. The job outlook is very positive now and in the future. Approximately 60–70 percent of the training is “hands-on” utilizing actual industrial equipment and situations emphasizing electrical safety in all of the training environments, classrooms, and labs.

The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce supports existing manufacturing companies and is attracting more. As a result, North Florida’s manufacturing association is investing in resources to train new people for industry. Florida Community College’s strong partnership with local companies has created one of the most comprehensive programs in the country. Throughout your training, you’ll have the opportunity to network with small and large manufacturers in north Florida and possibly become employed while you’re still in school.

Florida has more than 16,000 manufacturers employing more than 400,000, and the demand for more is high. And Florida Community College will refer you for internships and job interviews.

Annual Salaries
Entry level wage in industrial machinery and manufacturing in Florida averages $17.10 per hour. Overtime, bonuses, rapid advancement and opportunities for self-employment can rapidly increase your income.

Application Procedure
This program does not provide a Florida state workforce certificate but does provide a Florida Community College certificate. After completing the courses in this program, students can articulate to the certificate or college credit degree programs. Please contact your advisor 904.598.5676 to apply or for more information.

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is a major criterior in a student’s completion of Post Secondary Adult Vocational (PSAV) programs requiring 450 or more contact hours. Students who fail to meet the State of Florida’s designated exit score will be required to complete Vocational Preparatory Instruction (VPI). In order to complete the program successfully, students must achieve or surpass the designated exit score(s). (See Standards of Academic Progress.)

Basic minimum skill levels in math, reading, and language must be attained in order to complete this program. Students wishing to enter this program of study should be advised by the instructor or program manager prior to enrollment in these courses.

Applicants must:

1. Be accepted for admission to Florida Community College.
2. Provide a high school completion transcript or copy of GED® test scores.
3. Show completion of TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). For TABE information, call 904.633.8388.
