Correctional Officer (5710)
This program gives students a basic understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the line
correctional officer. In addition, it gives the students an overview of the other related fields within the criminal justice
system. Specific areas in which students will receive instruction include operational procedures, legal aspects of
corrections, supervisory practices and related technical skills.
Jobs are expected to grow faster than the average; opportunities are expected to be excellent. Median annual salary for
correctional officers in 2002 was $32,670.
This program is accredited by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
As part of the application process, students are required to take and pass the Corrections Officer Basic Abilities Test
(COBAT), a driving history check, physical agility testing, drug screening, health physical, medical examination, polygraph,
background investigations and oral interview. All students must have attained either a high school diploma or equivalency degree
(certificates of completion are not acceptable.) Students must also be 19 years of age, have a valid drivers license
and be an American citizen.

Upon successful completion of the correctional officer basic recruitment training, students may receive up to 28 hours of college credit
toward the Criminal Justice
Officer Administration A.S./A.A.S. degree program (2339). See the program description for credit award requirements.
At the discretion of the dean, a waiver of prerequisites for this course may be obtained at the request of an agency
or based upon the classes needed of an out-of-state officer entering into the Florida certification program.
