Hazardous Materials Specialist (6021)

Vigilance in the manufacture, storage and transportation of hazardous materials not only protects our health and well-being, it impacts our national defense, especially in Jacksonville. Our combination of industry, international shipping, logistics and location on the St. Johns River puts us at a particularly high risk.

This college credit certificate will supply well-trained workers with a broad perspective on the environment and safety. There is a need for this training because businesses or companies must be in compliance with federal regulations, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Guide, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Employers are required to protect and to preserve the well-being and health of their employees. The curriculum will prepare those responsible for safety and health in the workplace to manage hazardous waste, to respond in the event of an hazardous incident and to properly collect, analyze and interpret the results of quality air, aqueous and solid environmental samples in a safe and efficient manner.

Potential careers this certificate could lead to include: compliance officer, environmental engineering technician, environmental science technician, environmental scientist or specialist, occupational health and safety specialist or technician, water and liquid waste treatment plant operator, hazardous materials removal worker and operating engineer/construction equipment operator. These skills would also be useful in fields such as construction, health and transportation.

Local corporate and governmental authorities participate on the Florida Community College advisory board for this program.  Members include: CSX, JEA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Army Corp of Engineers, St. Johns River Water Management District and others. These programs meet their anticipated needs.

Annual Salaries
The average starting hourly wage of these jobs is $13 and can be as high as $18.

Articulations
This certificate articulates directly into the Hazardous Materials Technician associate in applied science degree (A167).

Estimated tuition is $930 for Florida residents as of 7/06. Contact the program manager for additional costs (textbooks, materials and fees).
