CJK 0075 Investigating Offenses

This course includes causes and effects of domestic violence; procedures for referral; the importance of law enforcement intervention; an officers responsibilities to provide information and give assistance to victims and witnesses; reasons for and theories behind spousal abuse; intervention and calming techniques. It also includes common facts and misconceptions about suicide and support resources available; factors and symptoms that signal suicide risk; and procedures and officers responsibilities for prevention and intervention. It teaches recruits to identify signs of adult, elder, and child abuse, and the proper procedures for reporting such abuses. Students also learn techniques for interviewing children. This course also teaches methods and skills for initially investigating a death from an unknown cause; determining if a crime occurred; conditions that determine death; definitions of rigor mortis, lividity, and decomposition; and the role of a medical examiner. The course defines and characterizes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and the situations in which an officer may encounter it. Students also learn the procedures for managing a crime scene, collecting and handling evidence, developing information, and preparing an investigation report.
