Computer Integrated Manufacturing (Industrial Automation Maintenance Technician/Specialist) (2165)

The time when manufacturing was only performed by a long assembly line of workers using hand applications is becoming history. Today lathes, milling machines and other manufacturing equipment are being replaced by computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines, programmed to exacting specifications and operated by technicians. Many of today’s production lines are fully automated in clean environments using robotics, electronic controls and computers. Industrial maintenance technicians keep the line moving by monitoring computer-controlled displays, using skills and experience to troubleshoot problems.

Florida Community College’s Computer Integrated Manufacturing program concentrates on these computer-controlled systems and applications. The program combines a general education with professional training in electronics, industrial components, various computer control software and hardware applications, industrial control circuits, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), hydraulics and pneumatics. There are also specialized courses in automated manufacturing systems such as automated process control, which prepares you to work in the food, chemical, paper pulp and pharmaceutical industries.

The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce supports existing manufacturing companies and is attracting more. As a result, North Florida’s manufacturing association is investing in resources to train new people for industry. Florida Community College’s strong partnership with local companies has created one of the most comprehensive programs in the country. Throughout your training, you’ll have the opportunity to network with small and large manufacturers in North Florida and possibly become employed while you’re still in school.

Annual Salaries
Entry level wage in industrial machinery and manufacturing in Florida averages $17.10 per hour. Overtime, bonuses, rapid advancement and opportunities for self-employment can rapidly increase your income.

Cost
Estimated cost of tuition is $4,250 (for Florida residents, as of 7/06). Estimated cost of books, materials and fees is $2,200.

Notes
You have two options in this program: the associate in science (A.S.) degree, which can prepare you for employment or transfer to a state university, and the associate in applied science (A.A.S.) degree, which is intended primarily for students who want immediate employment after graduation. If you choose the A.S. degree you must take MAC 1105, MGF 1106 or a higher level mathematics. The A.A.S. degree requires MAT 1033 or higher.
