Computer Programming
Specialist (SQL) (6159)
Structured Query Language (SQL) is used to develop database tables, reports, data entry screens and database applications. SQL is also used to update and retrieve information in databases. It is the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard computer language for accessing and manipulating database systems.
SQL is essential for database software development in several environments including Microsoft Access, Informix, MS SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase and IBMs DB2 Universal Database. Most of these have proprietary extensions that are usually used only on their systems. However, the standard SQL commands such as Select, Insert, Update, Delete, Create and Drop can be used to accomplish almost everything that one needs to do with a database.
Databases are essential for daily operations in business, education, government, military and NGO organizations. Individuals with database programming languages such as SQL are in critical demand today. From development of relational database systems, to linking together different database systems, SQL language skills are critical. There is currently an estimated shortage of 200,000 database developers in the United States, and this figure is growing.
Local entry-level salaries for database developers are in the $35,000 – $45,000 range. National average salaries are in the $60,000 range. Those with database conversion skills can make six-figure salaries.
