Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics (Diesel Technology) (5616)

Workforce Certificate

Through our Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanic program, you can become an expert in diesel technology. Your skills and knowledge will open the door to immediate employment as a diesel truck or bus mechanic. Following this program, you’ll be qualified to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification examination.

The advanced and specialized topics in our Diesel Technology program give currently working mechanics the opportunity to upgrade their skills and income level.

The program offers both classroom and hands-on shop time, enabling you to perform diagnostic and repair procedures with confidence. Instruction includes diagnosis and repair of diesel engines (fuel, lubricating, cooling, electrical and electronic systems) and associated truck and bus systems (brakes, drive train, steering, suspension, air conditioning and hydraulic systems). You’ll learn troubleshooting skills, shop practices, and service and maintenance of heavy duty trucks and buses to industry standards.

Internships

Employers contact us daily for talented candidates. Many employers are willing to hire students part-time while they are in school. It is possible to earn an income and gain on-the-job experience while completing your education.

Career Opportunities, Rapid Placement

The program is structured to meet the needs of the industry in the Jacksonville area, and has a better than 90% immediate placement record for graduates.

Certification, Annual Salaries

This program offers you the information and skills needed to take the ASE certification examination. Graduates with internship experience and certification can enter this field at about $40,000 a year.

Application Procedure

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is a major criterion in a student’s completion of the program. Students who fail to meet the State of Florida’s designated exit score will be required to complete the Vocational Preparatory Instruction (VPI). In order to complete the program successfully, students must achieve or surpass the designated exit score(s). See Standards of Academic Progress.

Students wishing to enter this program should be advised by the instructor or program manager prior to enrollment in these courses.

Cost

Estimated cost of tuition is $3,260 (tuition rated for Florida residents, as of 7/06). Contact the program manager for additional costs (materials, fees, textbooks).
