Enrollment for Adult Studies Programs
Adult Studies
The adult studies department of FCCJ operates
the adult basic education program, the high school equivalency program, the adult high school program, and the English
for speakers of other languages (ESOL) program. These programs
provide students the opportunity to learn the basic and academic
skills necessary to be prepared for the workforce. Supportive
services are provided in the areas of advising, testing, and computer-aided
instruction.
Adult Studies courses are offered at various
locations throughout the community.
Students who enroll in classes held on one
of FCCJ's four campuses will be required to fill out a membership
application and pay the one time $15 membership fee. Students
should carry their current registration slips when on campus.
The adult basic education program of Florida
Community College is designed to improve the employability of
the state's workforce through basic skills instruction in the
academic areas of reading, writing, math, and in workforce readiness
skills.
The primary focus of study may be on any one
or more of the following general knowledge areas.
- pre-vocational or employability skills development
- use of financial resources and consumer education
- human and interpersonal relations in the workplace
Performance in these general knowledge areas
will be based upon achievement in the following skill areas: reading,
writing, problem solving, and computation.
The program provides supportive services for
its students in the areas of guidance and counseling, testing,
computer-aided instruction, and specialized reading needs.
Enrollment in adult basic education classes
is available to all adults who are 16 years of age or older and
function below the ninth grade level on basic academic skills
assessments. Students must be tested to determine program placement
prior to registration.
Adult basic education classes are offered on
FCCJ campuses and other community locations throughout Duval County.
Tuition cost to students is waived if they test below the ninth
grade level.
Applicants 18 years and older seeking admittance
into the adult basic education program must submit the following:
- completed membership application including social security
number
- citizenship verification (Applicants must be citizens of the
United States or resident aliens. If applicants are not U.S.
citizens or resident aliens, FCCJ requires papers issued by
the Immigration and Naturalization Service to determine eligibility
for admission.)
Applicants 16 or 17 years old seeking admittance
into the adult basic education program must submit the following:
- completed membership application including social security
number
- citizenship verification (Applicants must be citizens of the
United States or resident aliens. If applicants are not US citizens
or resident aliens, FCCJ requires papers issued by the Immigration
and Naturalization Service to determine eligibility for admission.)
- confirmation from all high schools attended that individual
has not been convicted of any of the following offenses:
- Distribution of drugs
- Simple battery upon school employees or agents
- Robbery
- Extortion
- Burglary of school property
- Criminal mischief or vandalism
- Possession of weapons or dangerous objects
- Indecent public conduct
- Battery upon another student resulting in bodily harm
- Inciting or participating in a major student disorder
- Commission of any felony
The high school equivalency program of FCCJ is designed to assist
students in attaining an equivalent high school level of educational
accomplishment through preparation for the GED® test. The
program offers students the opportunity to obtain the necessary
skills required to successfully complete the GED® test and earn
a state high school equivalency degree. Instruction is offered
in the general education subjects of writing, social studies,
science, literature, and mathematics. The high school equivalency courses provide
foundation skills instruction at the ninth through 12th grade
levels. In addition to assisting students in obtaining an equivalency
diploma, this program assists students in developing and enhancing
their workplace skills to successfully achieve career and vocational
training and job placement success. Supportive services are provided
in the areas of advising, testing, and computer-aided instruction.
Students must be tested to determine program
placement prior to registration.
High school equivalency classes are offered on FCCJ campuses and
other locations throughout Duval County. Tuition is waived for
students who do not have a high school diploma and test above
the eighth grade level.
Students are encouraged to take the GED® test
after exhibiting mastery of course materials and successfully
passing the GED® practice test.
Applicants 18 years or older seeking admittance
into the high school equivalency program must submit the following:
- completed membership application including social security
number
- citizenship verification (Applicants must be citizens of the
United States or resident aliens. If applicants are not US citizens
or resident aliens, FCCJ requires papers issued by the Immigration
and Naturalization Service to determine eligibility for admission.)
Applicants 16 or 17 years old seeking admittance

The GED® test
is a battery of five tests administered on a regularly scheduled
basis by Florida Community College to individuals who are at least
18 years of age, not attending a public high school, citizens
of the United States or resident aliens, and Florida residents.
Information on test registration may be obtained from any campus
adult studies office or the campus assessment and certification
center. Guide lines for the registration fee are established by
the Department of Education. Individuals who pass the exam receive
a diploma from the State Department of Education.
Applicants who do not keep their GED® test
appointment must repay the fee to reschedule another appointment.
GED® test registration fees are non-refundable.
Adult High School
The adult high school program of Florida Community
College provides the opportunity for individuals age 18 or older
to earn sufficient credits to receive an FCCJ high school diploma.
All applicants wishing to pursue an FCCJ high school diploma must
have withdrawn from public or private high school. In addition,
students who have already graduated from high school may earn
credits in a specific subject matter for college admission or
other reasons.
Adult high school courses are offered during
the day and evening hours at all FCCJ campuses. Tuition fees are
waived for students who do not have a high school diploma. Textbooks
are purchased by the student.
The program provides supportive services for
its students in the area of guidance and counseling, testing,
computer-aided instruction, and specialized reading, writing,
and mathematics courses. Students enrolled to earn a high school
diploma from FCCJ (Degree Seeking) must be tested to determine
program placement prior to registration.
Adult High School Admission Requirements
Applicants 18 years and older will be admitted
to the FCCJ high school completion program to seek an FCCJ adult
high school diploma by submitting the following:
- completed membership application including social security
number
- proof of previous education (Applicants may transfer credits
earned from grades nine through 12 and be placed into appropriate
courses to meet the credit requirements for graduation. Official
transcripts, grades earned and other documents can be submitted
for specific course placement.)
- citizenship verification (Applicants must be citizens of
the United States or resident aliens. If applicants are not
US citizens or resident aliens, FCCJ requires papers issued
by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to determine eligibility
for admission.)
Students, 18 years old and over, who will transfer
credit to the high school in which they are enrolled must submit
the following:
- a completed membership application including social security
number
- permission letter (A letter on letterhead stationery from
the principal or counselor of the high school to which the student
desires to transfer credit is required each time an applicant
enrolls. The letter should indicate which subject(s) are approved
for transfer credit.)
Students who are already high school graduates
but who need credit for a specific reason (e.g., seeking admission
to FCCJ's nursing program but lack a chemistry credit) must submit
the following:
- a completed membership application for admission including
social security number
- course fees (Students must pay fees for courses taken.)
English for Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL) Non-Credit
The adult education non-credit ESOL program
of Florida Community College offers classes for community residents
whose native language is not English and who desire to learn and
improve their English language skills in preparation for job placement.
Instruction is offered at six different levels and covers listening,
speaking, reading, and writing skills from beginning to advanced
proficiency and includes skills useful in workplace, life, and
academic applications. Before registration, students must be tested
to determine placement levels. Classes are held at the Downtown
Campus during the day and at Kent Campus and various community
locations in the evening. For testing and registration information
