Digital Media/Multimedia Technology (2135)

Is it possible to earn a living playing games on the computer? Absolutely. When your career is in digital media design you can spend all day “Finding Nemo,” fighting “King Kong” and giving life to “synthespians,” the realistic digital humans used in games, sci-fi films and in stunts too dangerous for a live actor. Digital and multimedia design requires imagination, curiosity, creativity and technical expertise that put the POW! into production.

Florida Community College classes are taught at the industry level and offer advantages not available at any other school in Northeast Florida. You can specialize in Animation, Broadcasting, Audio Production (Recording Techniques), Interactive Design or Programming. You will work in professionally outfitted studios, produce 3-camera shoots with top-quality digital camcorders, edit and design on MAYA, the software used by Dreamworks and Disney. Our graduates regularly receive scholarships to the University of Florida, the University of North Florida, the University of Central Florida, Flagler College and Savannah College of Art and Design.

Two technical certificates are included as options within this degree program, Digital Media/Multimedia Video Production and Digital Media/Multimedia Production. Students may choose to pursue an A.S. or A.A.S. degree and earn technical certificates while completing the requirements for the degree, or pursue one or more certificate programs to develop or upgrade their skills in a particular field. Contact an advisor or counselor to determine the career education path that is best for you.

Internships
This unique, interdisciplinary program provides an internship experience to allow students to gain work experience. You can identify and choose your location or one can be facilitated by FCCJ at area employers such as Citibank, PBS, Vistakon, area advertising agencies or Logistics Services International. Some are paid positions and many lead to immediate employment.

Career Opportunities, Rapid Placement
Growth in this field is increasing. Television, film, Web site development and mobile technologies depend heavily on artists whose canvas is the computer. As digital technology decreases the cost of video production, it increases the number of independent filmmakers. Multimedia artists, editors and animators skilled in computer-generated imaging (CGI), as well as sound mixers and designers, all have outstanding job prospects, especially in Florida.

Annual Salaries
In Florida, the average entry-level salary for this field is $26,000–$38,000. The U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics reports 2004–2005 national salaries ranging from entry level at about $29,000 to more than $94,000 for experienced designers. Annual earnings for in film and video for those with experience average $67,390 and in advertising, $46,810.

Cost
Estimated tuition is $4,250 (for Florida residents, as of 7/06). Contact the program manager for additional costs (textbooks, materials, fees).
