Theatre and Entertainment Technology (Entertainment Technology) (221B)
Every time a curtain goes up, entertainment technicians go to work. They are the unseen, backstage
Houdini’s who dress in black and make magic happen. They bring the show to life.
Few people enter the profession without a formal education and strong intern experience. Florida
Community College’s two-year Entertainment Technology program offers both. Along with classroom study, you will have
hands-on stage lighting, sound, design and management, and learn costume and makeup techniques. You will earn credits for
participation in pre-production meetings, rehearsals, technical rehearsals and performances — skills that also
translate to film and television production.
Upon completion of this program, students may apply to take the examination for membership into
the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE),
the professional union representing backstage personnel.

Florida Community College offers 12 annual technical grants for tuition, fees and books, irrespective of financial status.
Cost-of-living grants are also available to qualifying students. An additional annual IATSE grant and matching State funds
provide $2,000 for students whose intent is to work in Jacksonville.
We are the official apprentice program for the local IATSE. You may intern on professional productions during your second
year in venues such as the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, Metropolitan Park, the Times-Union Performing Arts Center
and the Florida Theatre.
Some technicians are permanently employed by repertory companies, cruise ships and churches. However, most freelance for
touring companies, concerts, conventions, circuses, trade shows and major events such as the PGA Tour and the Super Bowl.
Every day is different.
Entry-level is about $12.75 an hour. Increases come with experience.
An A.S. degree may transfer to a state university and requires MAC 1105, MGF 1106 or a higher-level mathematics. Learn more at Transfer Services.
